More than 80% of Americans believe children should have the ability to attend the public school that best meets their needs.
Unfortunately, every child in this country is assigned to a school based on their home address – a practice that perpetuates economic and racial divides.
In 24 states, parents and guardians can still face imprisonment for crossing school or district boundary lines. To keep children in their government-assigned districts, school districts often hire private investigators to follow parents and verify residency requirements. These policies and practices are an unethical use of taxpayer resources and disproportionately criminalize people of color and individuals from working-class backgrounds.
It’s critical that this practice ends and all American families and students have equal access to public schools.

Our Commitment
We’re committed to ending exclusionary school district boundary lines in all 50 states by 2030. Over 82% of American K-12 students are locked into school district lines that reinforce racial and economic divisions, preventing them from accessing the public education that matches their needs.
